"13 Questions" with Cal Slayton

by Karon Flage, Sequential Tart

Cal Slayton, our cover artist this month, is the artist for Amp Comics' Shades of Blue, written by James S. Harris and Rachel Nacion. You can try out a weekly online version of Shades of Blue at http://www.comics2u.com. Cal will also have a five page story called "Lost Child" that he wrote, pencilled, inked and lettered in the first issue of a comic anthology called Digital Webbing Presents from http://www.digitalwebbing.com. He was kind enough not only to create a kick-ass cover Tart for us but to answer some questions as well.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. What did you have for breakfast?

Fruity Pebbles. Seriously.

2. What's your favorite winter activity?

Staying warm. If it snows, I like to sit and watch. But alas, I live in Texas.

3. Who're your favorite Muppets?

Gonzo, Beeker and Katie Couric.

4. What's the coolest toy you had as a kid?

GI Joe with Kung Fu Grip, Evel Knievel and all of my Mego action figures. I had a lot of cool toys and still do.

5. What do you like on your pizza?

Pepperoni, maybe some tomatoes and green peppers.

6. What's the current soundtrack to your life?

Jurassic 5, Royal Tenenbaums Soundtrack, Gorillaz, Dilated Peoples and always a little Beasties mixed in.

7. What did you want to be when you grew up?

Comic book artist or an astronaut. For a while there I was looking into Rodeo Clown College but my S.A.T.s were abysmal.

8. The best Monopoly properties to own?

The jail? I don't know, I was better at Battleship and Stratego.

9. People who know you would find it hard to believe you ....

That I'm a former child actor. I played Larry Mundello on Leave it to Beaver.

10. Coke or Pepsi?

I'm a card-carrying Pepper.

11. What's the strangest thing you've ever dressed up as for Hallowe'en?

One half of Milli Vanilli, I'm pretty sure I was Vanilli.

12. When you get stressed out what do you do for fun and to relieve tension?

For fun ... watch movies, read, make stupid movies (http://www.dogfoodproductions.com). To relieve tension ... maybe crank up some music. Lately it's been playing Grand Theft Auto 3 on PS2; you can get rid of a lot of aggression that way. Not for the faint of heart.

13. What's the weirdest thing anyone's ever asked you to draw in his or her sketchbook and did you draw it?

Nothing yet. I'm actually looking forward to something weird. So if you ever see me, request something strange and unusual.
